Master series at Drupa 2012

Trelleborg, a leading manufacturer of printing blankets, will launch the ‘Institute of Contemporary Print’ at the international trade show for print media DRUPA 2012. “Taking centre stage within the Institute will be ‘The Masters’ Collection’, a compilation of artworks produced in association with aspiring students from Germany and the Netherlands. These have been specifically developed to showcase modern interpretations of some of the world’s most famous pieces of art, while demonstrating the versatility, capabilities and range of our printing blankets on virtually any substrate.”

Being one of the artists that was commissioned to make an interpretation of an iconic masterpiece, I decided it had to be a Dutch painting and a true icon. Vermeer’s most famous girl is not only a fabulous painting, she is also a true ‘cover girl’ that stood the test of time. Generations of artists have been inspired by er and tried to capture the magic of her looks. It became an iconic image and the more it is copied, the stronger the original becomes. My interpretation of ’the girl with the pearl earring’ takes advantage of this strength. The picture is reduced to graphic forms in vibrant colors and still this girl from around 1665 comes alive in our modern minds. That is the power of painting; bringing alive the things we can not see.
